Visiting Manasija Monastery requires modest clothing. Because monks and nuns live and worship here, visitors must respect traditional Orthodox guidelines before entering the fortress walls.

What is the Manasija Monastery dress code?

You must wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

Men should wear long trousers. Women should wear long skirts, dresses, or trousers. Sleeveless tops, tank tops, and short shorts are strictly prohibited inside the complex.

Do women need to cover their heads?

Women are not strictly required to wear a headscarf at Manasija Monastery, but it is a welcome sign of respect.

While headscarves are optional, bringing a large scarf is highly recommended. You can quickly drape it over your shoulders if you are wearing a short-sleeved top on a hot day.

What shoes should I wear?

Wear comfortable, flat walking shoes or sneakers.

The monastery is surrounded by massive defensive walls and uneven ground. You will walk on stone paths and grass. Avoid high heels or flimsy sandals, as they make exploring the fortress perimeter difficult.

Should I bring a jacket?

Yes, pack a light jacket or sweater, especially if you plan to visit nearby natural sites.

Many visitors combine the monastery with the nearby Resava Cave. The cave maintains a constant temperature of 7°C year-round. A sweater keeps you warm underground and helps cover your shoulders at the monastery.
